I celebrate birthdays more now than I did as a kid!!!

I should have died back in 1990 in a rotational fall when I swallowed my tongue and smashed my upper torso. Instead, a 19yo fence judge saved me by clearing my throat when my face turned blue at Weston Park advanced, Staffordshire.

Strange to think that nearly 30 years on, I drive past Weston Park on route to the North West to run ring craft clinics with Charlotte Thomas, each month. I still vividly feel the scratch on my feet from the paramedic, who resuscitated me following my fall, asking me who the prime minister is!! I kept telling him it was Margaret Thatcher but he kept on scratching my bloody feet!!
Well the contusion on my brain that was caused by a lack of oxygen meant I slept soon after for 8 days. I woke up looking up the nose of an Indian doctor in Addenbrookes) as I had been transferred from Staffordshire General a few days earlier). I passed out for another few days. On wakening, I was determined that I could pee further than my granddad. Why, I have no idea!!!!

Apparently Tim Randle (who won the class on Legs Eleven at Weston Park) popped in to wish me well, and kindly left a card of good wishes. I had no idea. I was just starving and ate everything I could get my hands on. The entire fruit bowl, all of it. All the chocolates, everything. I couldn't focus on anything for 3 weeks, it was all a blurry mist. I felt plastered, totally pissed.

I was the 'King of Rock n Roll' in my mind and life was amazing. I couldn't walk in a straight line for months but was allowed to drive, no problem. What was that about? I was determined to ride so ride I did. I was legged up on 17hh Montgomery V, only to fall straight of the other side. I fell on the concrete and laughed, so they put me up again and we got on with it. That was just the way it was, that's how it rolled.

As the brain settled 18 years of cluster head aches ensued and grit set in further. A truly character building time.

Getting on with it was key though.

Strange to think that Charlie Gingell, Saskia Gingell and Katya Gingell wouldn't exist without that fence judge clearing my throat. I'd never have the opportunity to fulfill any of my dreams without Jayne Gingell by my side and our family wouldn't be so complete without Ivi Fox and Archie Gingell.

Commercially, the concept of Bespoke supplements would still be a dream, not a reality with 20,000 customers in 20+ countries. The same old traditional and backward thinking 'one formula suits all' companies would still be having it their own way and horse owners having no choice of better, more effective and targeted supplement options.

So life is short, please give me a REALLY Happy Birthday, and tell me about your horse / pony / dog. It'll cost you nothing and each one will put a BIG smile on my face :)
